Transformation of 1-G and 2-G liquid biomass to green fuels using hydroprocessing technology: A promising technology for biorefinery development

Liquid biomass, a valuable renewable resource with high energy density can be processed into green fuels that are similar to petroleum fuels using hydroprocessing technology. Hydroprocessing is a well-known classical petroleum operation for eliminating heteroatoms from crude oil such as S, N, and O before splitting the higher molecules into lower ones. Traditional technology has lately been employed to convert first-generation (1-G) and second-generation (2-G) liquid biomass into more efficient multi-range hydrocarbons, such as diesel and jet fuels. Current review is focused on the transformation of 1-G and 2-G liquid biomass into green fuels using hydroprocessing technology. This article investigates the hydroprocessing of 1-G and 2-G liquid biomass to produce green fuels using mono, bi, tri and renewable catalysts under varying operating parameters. Commercial green fuels and their conversion technologies are elaborated. The chemistry and mechanisms of hydroprocessing of 1-G and 2-G liquid biomass are also investigated. The fuel characteristics of a various liquid biofuels and conventional fuels were collated. Moreover, the current status of the green diesel industry is incorporated. The future perspective and economic analysis of hydroprocessing technology is also discussed. Hydroprocessing is a promisisng technology for future biorefinery establishments.
