Regioselectivity of the multicomponent reaction between diaminomaleonitrile, trimethyl orthoacetate and α-amino acids, controlled by the energy source. Imidazoles are obtained under thermal condition, pyrimidines under photochemical conditions while purines by applying photothermal conditions.
