Carlos Machado’s (M.’s) fine book amasses a wealth of new and old archaeological and epigraphic evidence, along with a wide range of texts, to demonstrate how Late Roman aristocrats used urban space to both accrue and manifest power – political, social, and religious. His focus on urban space offers a coherent lens through which to explore the influence of the Late Roman senatorial aristocracy whose “social and political strategies ... remained remarkably consistent over the three centuries covered in this study, in spite of violent political changes and radical religious developments” (2). Although the senatorial aristocracy has been the object of much study in terms of its religious choices, officeholding patterns, and political interactions, this book consistently focuses on their use of urban space. As such, M.’s study offers an important alternative path for considering Rome and its residents, elites and non-elites alike.
