This article embeds an attempt at internal reconstruction of the pronominal roots of Mochica, an extinct language of the north coast of Peru, into broader comparative perspectives on the consonantism of pronominal paradigms. Mochica presents a case of so-called m-t pronouns (i.e., featuring a bilabial nasal in the first-person pronoun and an alveolar stop or affricate in the second-person pronoun), which is common in Eurasia but rare in the Americas and hitherto not explicitly discussed for South America. An internal reconstruction of pre-Mochica pronominal roots, while fraught with some difficulties that presumably cannot be resolved due to the nature of the available colonial documentation, confirms that the m-t consonantism pertains to the diachronically reconstructable pronominal roots. This finding reaffirms that even paradigmatic resemblances are not immune to the chance factor and underscores the previously advised caution in interpreting such patterns as evidence for deep linguistic prehistory.
