Ageing with Smartphones in Ireland: When Life Becomes Craft is part of a book series on a project called ‘The Anthropology of Smartphones and Smart Ageing’. The project focuses on the experiences of ageing and the role of the smartphone among people ‘who generally do not regard themselves as either young or elderly’ (p. xi). The project is a collaboration among 11 researchers from nine countries who spent 16 months living in communities in Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. The outcomes are presented in nine ethnographic monographs, following the same structure with the exception of one of the chapters. They are each based on 25 recorded interviews focusing on what the researchers consider to be three primary areas of smartphone use: ageing, life purpose and health. ‘A key element in the smartphone interviews was to ask people to open up their smartphones, record every single app present on the screens and discuss whether these were used and, if so, how’ (p. 23). This book focuses on Ireland. It is split into an introductory chapter, seven substantial chapters on ageing and retirement; everyday life; ageing and social life; smartphones and ageing; health and care; downsizing and life purpose; and a concluding chapter. The book offers interesting insights for media and communication scholars from an ethnographic perspective.
