The mechanisms of transformation of composition of heavy oils with different genotypes due to reaction with a hydrothermal fluid at 310°C temperature and 50 MPa pressure are investigated. The content of saturated hydrocarbons and linear alkanes decreases and of aromatic hydrocarbons and resins increases in A1-type heavy oil when it is submitted to hydrothermal action. Upon hydrothermal action on B2-type heavy oil, the content of aromatic hydrocarbons decreases and of asphaltenes and saturated hydrocarbons increases in it. The peak of molecular mass distribution of n-alkanes shifts to the low-boiling region and the content of isoalkanes decreases. This indicates that the composition of heavy oils affects the dominance of certain reactions that occur in the thermal fluid.
