Mark Peters: Yes, we always knew there were going to be challenges because of the regional city reality. Key businesses and many of the necessary skills sets were located in Australia and some overseas, not on the Gold Coast or in South-East Queensland; however, it provided a great opportunity for local businesses to partner with larger companies to up-skill and diversify similarly with the local workforce. Perhaps this is could be one of the big legacies of the Games in having many businesses and people from the Gold Coast and South-East Queensland develop the skills required to be contributors to major events and associated opportunities. The Gold Coast has always had transport issues as a linear regional city and been reliant on car travel. The Games brought the matter to a head and highlighted the need for long-term planning if the city was to progress.
