For the abstracts of each annual meeting, I like to pick out words that convey what I see as dominant or emerging themes of the abstracts. This year, as expected, COVID-19 stood strong in my assessment, as did opioids, disparities, the HEART score and machine learning. But my gestalt did not give any clear theme. So, I created a word cloud from all 966 abstracts using a free on-line tool. It was to my chagrin that the dominant word, front and center, was “patients.” I should have known. The people who provide emergency care go into this job and stay in it for the patients.

All the best,

As the editor in chief of Academic Emergency Medicine Education and Training, I am sure the educational abstracts selected this year will resonate with each you. The impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our learners and our educational environment has been resounding. That theme was loud and clear this year with abstracts about health disparities, well-being and burnout, virtual education, virtual oral boards, virtual interviews and telehealth. If COVID was not enough, what about the challenges we are facing as a specialty related to the workforce study and the ability of our residents to find jobs post pandemic? In addition to these provocative topics, you will have a chance to review cutting edge research related to artificial intelligence and clinical decision support for our learners. Last, but surely not least, are the abstracts centered on racism, sexism, and bullying in the workplace. I hope you have the opportunity to talk to your emergency medicine colleagues about their work during our annual meeting.

Looking forward to seeing you at the abstract sessions!
