Abstract
This review was timed to coincide with the 9th Russian Zeolite Conference “Zeolites and Mesoporous Materials: Achievements and Prospects,” which was held in Grozny on October 5–9, 2021. This conference was dedicated to the memory of Academician Salambek Khadzhiev, who passed away on March 2, 2018. Academician Khadzhiev, an outstanding petroleum chemist, a talented leader and organizer, and a remarkable person, devoted his life to the establishment and development of petroleum chemistry and catalysis at the local (in the city of Grozny), national, and world levels. The review reveals and summarizes the contribution of people from Grozny to the initiation and development of catalyst production in Grozny, a city where the first studies in the USSR on the synthesis and industrial production of zeolites were carried out. We further show the role of the Grozny Petroleum Research Institute (GrozNII) in the explorations of catalyst synthesis and related catalytic processes, and in the growth of relevant industrial facilities throughout the country during the periods when the institute was headed by A.N. Sakhanov, A.Z. Dorogochinskii, and S.N. Khadzhiev. The names of Grozny scientists who contributed significantly to the development of national catalyst and zeolite production are mentioned.
