ABSTRACT

The police profession involves numerous risk factors which can have an impact on the officers’ health. Delivering death notifications is one of the most stressful tasks with lack of training and poor aftercare. We analyzed data of 142 German officers regarding their experiences with death notifications, use of aftercare, and access to training. Officers feel most stressed by the interaction with the bereaved and the subjectively perceived lack of competence in dealing with them. Three-quarters would like more support after stressful operations, and over 80% reported the need of aftercare, although this is only offered to 40%. Support services as well as training are rarely used, due to lack of trust and fear of stigmatization. Content perceived as helpful for future training could be identified. The results clearly show the challenges of the police profession and highlight the lack of aftercare. Training and adequate support must be provided and become accessible.
