Over the last 30 years, there have been numerous studies on the archaeological and nautical history of 16th-century shipwrecks in Pensacola Bay. This analysis has instead focused on the surviving personal possessions of the crew and passengers of the 1559–1561 Tristán de Luna y Arellano expedition. For this study, a multifaceted analysis concentrated on one specific aspect: religious iconography. Religious iconography offers a brief glimpse into the symbolic and individualistic nature of personal possessions found on 16th-century shipwrecks. Hence, research gathered through intense study of select personal possessions will help contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the material identity of 16th-century vessels.
