Early Childhood Education and Care: A sustainable system?
Australasian Journal of Early Childhood ( IF 1.238 ) Pub Date : 2022-01-12 , DOI: 10.1177/18369391211072582

In the last issue of AJEC Dr Claire Blewitt’s editorial (2021, p. 293) highlighted the ideas that complexity and change characterise early childhood settings, and that engaging with this complexity “is an ongoing concern” for all of those involved in young children’s lives. Recognising and naming complexity as a key feature of early childhood settings is a political act. This is especially so at a time when, in Australia, hard-won structures that support quality (such as access to an early childhood teacher) (Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority [ACECQA], 2021) are beginning to be compromised by an unsustainable early childhood education system. Additionally, the goodwill and motivation of the workforce has been eroded by unprecedented natural and viral disasters. In short, the system cannot go on as it is.
