Growth, yield and economic evaluation of early mint technology under poplar based silvi-medicinal system in the foothills of Himalaya

Mentha arvensis and Populus deltoides are extensively cultivated in prime agriculture land of Terai and the Indo-Gangetic region. The investigation was carried out by taking four varieties of menthol mint under poplar based agroforestry and open farming system to evaluate the interaction effect on growth, yield and economic parameters of mint varieties. The growth and yield parameters of crop were recorded maximum under open farming system. The maximum total fresh herbage and oil yield were found more in Kosi and CIM Kranti varieties, respectively. Oil content of 1.21 and 1.27% was found maximum in CIM Kranti variety at 1st and 2nd harvest under open farming system. Total oil yield of 186 l ha−1 was maximum under open farming system and 73 l ha−1 under poplar based agroforestry system. Integration of menthol mint with poplar increased the average increment in diameter at breast height (+ 4.1 %), height (+ 4.7 %) and volume (+ 12.3 %) of poplars. Gross returns of ₹ 2,36,227 ha-1 and net returns of ₹ 1,45,073 ha-1 were obtained from variety CIM Kranti from silvi-medicinal system. The maximum B:C ratio of respectively 3.30 and 1.59 were obtained for CIM Kranti variety under open farming and poplar based agroforestry systems.
