Composite nanocontainers synthesized by in-situ growth of metal organic frameworks on layered double hydroxides having both passive and active protecting capabilities

A novel composite nanocontainer is prepared by in-situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), a typical metal organic framework, on Znsingle bondAl layered double hydroxides (LDH). The polyvinyl butyral (PVB) coatings embedded with LDH/ZIF-8 nanocontainers pre-loaded with 1H-benzotriazole exhibit both active and passive protection on copper substrates. The active protecting property is ensured by the trap of corrosive chloride of LDHs and the on-demand release of the pre-loaded corrosion inhibitors from ZIF-8. The passive protecting property is provided by the barrier capability of brucite-like layers of Znsingle bondAl LDH nanosheets. In addition, the excellent compatibility with PVB resin and the highly porous structure of the in-situ grown ZIF-8 on LDH substrate can also explain the excellent corrosion performance of the composite coatings.
