There is a global call to address gender equality in energy, such as the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 5 and 7. I discuss the case study of the Solar Mamas’ programme of the Barefoot College in rural Rajasthan that trains rural women in small-scale energy technology. The training, and engagement with the ‘eco-campus’ life particularly facilitated their ‘transformative’ empowerment while promoting entrepreneurship in energy technology. Additionally, the solar programme supported the transition to clean energy technology in rural areas. These are new approaches in gender, energy and development, and women's empowerment literature, which can inform progressive and gender aware energy policies and programmes. Nevertheless, a challenge is often the lack of a market in rural areas. Issues also emerged regarding the design and affordability of the solar cookers.

Barefoot College
