Teen dating violence (TDV; also called adolescent relationship abuse) remains a significant public health concern globally. Prevalence varies depending on the type of abuse (ie, physical, emotional, sexual) and the way it is measured (ie, past year, lifetime). In the US, the National Survey on Teen Relationships and Intimate Violence study demonstrates that 66% of youth who have dated report a lifetime history of emotional violence; 18%, physical dating violence; and 18%, sexual violence. Other nationally representative data from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey reveal that 10% of youth who have dated in the past 12 months report physical and sexual dating violence. Globally, from the World Health Organization’s multicountry study on women’s health and domestic violence against women that included adolescents 15 years and older, 3% to 24% of women reported that their first sexual experience was forced, and for many, this occurred during adolescence. TDV has profound health impacts during adolescence and across the life course. Thus, efficacious and easily implementable prevention interventions are critical for promoting adolescent health and wellness.
