Reconstruction of Sediment and Peat Accumulation Conditions Based on the Petrographic Composition of Coal in the Verkhnedneprovsk Deposit, Dnieper Brown Coal Basin

Abstract

The article presents the results of a study of brown coal from the Verkhnedneprovsk deposit located in the northeastern Dnieper brown coal basin (Dneprobass) within the Srednedneprovsk block of the Ukrainian Shield. It is shown that the Paleogene brown coal formed in Dneprobass in the Middle Eocene during the subsidence of the Srednedneprovsk block and the marine transgression from the Dnieper–Donets depression into erosional-tectonic paleovalleys. Development conditions of the Paleogene brown coal formation corresponding to a single polyfacies sedimentation cycle, with coal as one of the facies, are characterized. It is established that the presence of various petrographic coal types in the seam section and their cyclic distribution, associated primarily with different conditions of the accumulation and decomposition of organic residues, is related to geotectonic constraints. Depending on the peat bog position in the paleovalley, the peat was accumulated in coastal lowlands under the influence of the marine environment or in overgrown swampy lakes. Increased bitumen content in the studied coals and high wax content in the bitumen should be explained not only by their enrichment in liptinite and the presence of a significant amount of wax-bearing plants in the initial material, but also by the specific conditions of peat plant material decomposition under the influence of seawater.
