Abstract

In future, if all garments are to have multiple lives, how would this change the design process? This practice-based exploratory research project was designed to provide a conceptual model for a new fashion design process for circularity. The concept of designing garments specifically for the rental market or to have multiple users is still in its infancy. A new combination of design intentions was explored that resulted in three redesigned prototypes, for which subsequent wearer trials indicated an increase in product versatility as a result. The new design process could be utilised by a range of practitioners looking to evolve their practice. Overall, we can surmise, there is potential for evolving circular fashion practice and the fashion system through evolving the design process. One style, many possibilities, is perhaps what defines fashion design for multiple lives. Garments that can endure, evolve and be a part of many people’s lives could help reduce garment consumption and lead to new interactions with fashion.
