Dynamics of cylindrical structures in axial flow: A review

This paper presents a review of research done to-date on the dynamics of cylindrical structures immersed in axially flowing fluid. The dynamics of a flexible cylinder supported at its extremities or cantilevered is recalled first; at low flow velocities the cylinder is subjected to flow-induced damping, but at sufficiently high flow velocities to fluid-elastic instabilities: static divergence and flutter. Then, the dynamics of very long cylinders, unconventionally supported and towed cylinders is discussed, as well as cantilevered cylinders in reverse flow, extruding-deploying cylinders, cylindrical structures simultaneously subjected to internal and external axial flows, articulated and clustered cylinders in axial flow.
