This special issue celebrates selected papers from the 2021 AJEC Symposium, Complexity and Change: Contemporary Research in Early Childhood, held in the second year of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The stressors caused by the pandemic have been felt across the early childhood sector and a growing body of research explores the challenges facing young children and the ways in which families, educators and early years programmes are adapting (Yoshikawa et al., 2020). The emergence of solidarity and shared recognition between educators following prolonged periods of lockdown (Quinones), and introduction of organisation-level strategies to support educator well-being (Logan, McFarland, Cumming & Wong) are two examples that reflect the individual, interpersonal and organisational dimensions of change incurred by the pandemic.
