With Philosophy and Film: Bridging Divides, editors Christina Rawls, Diana Neiva, and Steven S. Gouveia gather essays of diverse methodology and disciplinary orientation to productively construct points of connection – “bridges” – within scholarship treating philosophy and film. As the anthology's title rightly reflects, bridges are meaningful only when they span an existing divide, and there are many such gulfs operative here. If the book grapples with a fundamental question – what might it mean to bridge philosophy and film? – it must concomitantly negotiate the question's terms: what is philosophy? and what is film (and film analysis)? These questions generally take shape around the gorges of disciplinarity. However, rather than officiate a film studies-focused quarrel between analytic and continental philosophy, the anthology more elegantly opts to let the authors speak for themselves; to quote the editors, “Philosophy and Film: Bridging Divides is philosophy in action” (p. 1). One consequence of this approach is that, while several essays directly articulate arguments concerning plausible relationships between philosophy and film, many do not. Another consequence is that few of the authors are in immediate conversation with one another, particularly where it concerns the analytic/continental divide. Thus, readers seeking answers regarding the book's fundamental queries are encouraged to make their own inferences – to build their own bridges – on the basis of the anthology's many examples. Film scholars, philosophers, as well as those betwixt and between, will find in this book a partial, but enlightening, catalogue of philosophical approaches to cinema and cinematic approaches to philosophy.
