Phase retrieval by amplitude modulation using digital micromirror device

Reconstruction errors and stagnation in iterative phase retrieval have been alleviated with the use of random illumination carried out using phase diffusers. Traditionally implemented using photoresist plates or phase-type light modulators, phase diffusers are wavelength-specific, thus, severely limiting their applications. In this study, a technique for phase retrieval based on amplitude modulation using a digital micromirror device is demonstrated through simulations and experiments. Effects of diffuser element size and sampling region are investigated with smaller binning and regions close to the diffuser resulting in enhanced reconstructions. The technique can be applied in the investigations of various wavelength-selective biological samples.
