It was with a sense of sadness to read of the death earlier this year of the physician and historian Dr Gert H Brieger (1932–2021). Despite his lifetime commitment to promoting medical history at the highest standard in the USA, his reputation was less known in the UK. Fortunately, much of his work remains in print and for those with an interest in both medical history and the development of medical education, his writing continues to offer particular relevance. His own interpretation also reflected a particular interest in interdisciplinary teaching and learning which in turn allowed his work to be accepted across a range of academic and vocational areas.
