Evaluation of Surface Characteristics with Pre-treatment Polishing Process in Pulsed Laser Polishing AISI 4140 Mold Steel

Laser polishing is the process of removing surface irregularities from a material by melting or removing the material surface using the strong heat generated by the interaction between the irradiated laser beam and the material. In this study, a pulsed laser micro polishing system was fabricated, and its performance was evaluated for the surface polishing of AISI 4140 mold steel. The surface of AISI 4140 mold steel was machined using laser beam scanning based on spatial components (dots and lines) and conditions to minimize the roughness of the machined surface were derived. In addition, mapping between the laser power and scan speed, and the surface roughness results was performed. Polishing was performed using the derived process parameters to analyze the surface roughness and characteristics of pulsed laser polishing, and the surface characteristics through the grinding process and WEDM (wire electro-discharge machining) were compared and evaluated. Finally, the residual stress of the surface subjected to grinding, wire electro-discharge machining, and laser polishing was measured.
