ABSTRACT

Thermal barrier coatings permit gas turbine engines to function at elevated service temperatures with higher efficiency and protect the base metal from deterioration. The desirable properties of TBCs are low thermal conductivity, favourable microstructural characteristics, and optimum sintering behaviour. The purpose of this review/perspective article is to highlight the TBC requirement, two important processing techniques and their future prospects. Alternate use of nanostructured coatings may yield superior advantages. A superlattice nanolayer scheme which is structurally gradient is introduced (with intervening superplastic layers) and can reduce spallation damage.
