The hierarchical self-assembly of tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-featured M2L4-type metal–organic cages (MOCs) and β-cyclodextrin-conjugated polyethylenimine (PEI-βCD) via host–guest chemistry generates fluorescent supramolecular nanoparticles (FSNPs) that can deliver protein into neural cells, a cell line that is hard to transfect by the conventional strategy.
