As I wrote in a previous editorial, these individuals do a truly outstanding job for little or no reward for the substantial amount of time that the task entails.¹ I am fully aware of how annoying it can be when a review request lands in your email inbox, but please make every effort to say yes. Having high quality, peer-reviewed journals relies on the selfless nature of people willing to put in the time, and I want you to know that it is greatly appreciated. As an additional reminder, there is also a mechanism for reviewers to receive credit for their hard work through publons.com, which allows you to maintain a record of your reviews (without any breach of confidentiality). This can be especially beneficial when applying for academic promotion.
