Computer-aided process planning in immersive environments: A critical review

Immersive visualization technologies have been the subject of a significant amount of research in the engineering and manufacturing communities. As a result, various tools have been developed to support a wide range of processes throughout the lifecycle of a product, such as design, review, process planning, manufacturing, inspection, training, maintenance, and remote assistance. However, the impact of these technologies on process planning activities has received comparatively less attention. In this paper, we examine current advances in immersive visualization technologies in the field of Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) and identify current challenges, future directions, and research gaps. CAPP is studied through the lens of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) to propose a series of design guidelines for the development of VR-based immersive CAPP technology. The primary conclusion of the review is that although immersive visualization technologies can improve various process planning scenarios, such as decision-making and real-time response support, verification, training, and automatic generation of process plans, many challenges such as data interoperability, unidirectional 3D data flows, and operation accuracy from technology, process, and organization aspects remain to be addressed.
