A spontaneous redox reaction between the phenoxy radical Spiro-O8 and Li metal forms a highly conductive and uniform artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) to protect the Li metal. Phenoxy radicals aid the decomposition of the lithium salt, leading to the formation of LiF inorganic film on the top. The dual-layered protective film gives stable dendrite-free cycling at high current density and area capacity.
