In this essay we put forward the notion of corporate social imperialism to encapsulate our reflections and lived experience on Political Corporate Social Responsibility (PCSR) practices in the Alto Biobío region of central-southern Chile. Two of the authors who are Indignenous Mapuche-Pehuenche and from the region led a struggle against the siting of the emblematic Ralco dam in early 1990s. The megaproject was eventually pushed through and 90 families were resettled elsewhere. The Spanish energy corporation and its foundation, in line with PCSR played a prominent role in the local development and resettlement of the families. However, since the rehousing we have witnessed the community decay as a result of widespread alcoholism, depression, suicide, domestic violence, whilst our ancestral practices and spirituality have been colonized by the evangelical church. We finish by offering recommendations to managers and policymakers on how to possibly avoid the pitfalls of corporate social imperialism.
