Take-Home Messages •The proposed scheme significantly enhances a reconstruction accuracy of dielectric breast profile in the DBIM by introducing a low resolution reconstruction and limited ROI, which would contribute a higher recognition rate of cancer detection in highly heterogeneous and dispersive breast media. •An appropriate selection of initial background media in the DBIM, significantly enhances not only the reconstruction accuracy but also computational efficiency. •Microwave based breast cancer diagnosis, especially for early-stage. •The inherent problem in the inverse scattering analysis, namely, ill-posed problem, could be significantly resolved by introducing the multi-resolution DBIM and ROI limitation scheme. •The basic idea of the proposed scheme could be extended to other imaging scenario, and provide some inspirations to the reader or researcher involved in dealing with a similar problem.
