Preparation and Characterization of Hollow 316L Stainless Steel Spheres Prepared by Powder Metallurgy

In this study, we firstly fabricated green spheres with an automatic coating machine using 316L stainless steel powder, polystyrene particles, and polyvinyl alcohol aqueous solution. These green spheres were then sintered at different temperatures in a high-temperature vacuum furnace to produce hollow metal spheres (HMSs). The effects of the sintering temperatures on the physical parameters, microstructure, and compression performance of the HMSs were investigated. Results show that the diameter and the wall thickness of HMSs decrease gradually with increasing sintering temperatures, while the wall density and overall density of the HMS increase steadily. When the sintering temperature is 1250 °C, the HMSs have the lowest wall porosity (24.44 ± 0.06 %) and the highest overall density (1.59 ± 0.03 g/cm3), which provides the best compressive performance of all the sintering temperatures we evaluated. In this paper, we also discuss the deformation mechanism of HMSs.
