Transfer behaviors of 90Sr and 137Cs from soil to grass to cow milk under natural conditions in Central Italy and their exposure risk

Based on the newly-developed techniques, the transfer behaviors of 90Sr and 137Cs under natural conditions were studied. The concentrations of 90Sr and 137Cs in soil, grass, vegetable and cow milk samples were determined. The obtained soil to grass transfer factor of 90Sr was 54 times as that of 137Cs. The grass to milk transfer coefficients showed that 137Cs is much easier into milk than 90Sr. The total effective dose for a public due to 90Sr and 137Cs intake through vegetable and milk was estimated to be 2.29 μSv a−1, being well below the exemption level recommended by the ICRP.
