Structural significance of the Alvand mantled granite-gneiss dome exhumation within the Zagros hinterland fold-and-thrust belt, Iran

The Alvand mantled granite-gneiss dome developed within the Zagros hinterland fold-and-thrust belt. This belt is located in the core of the Zagros thick-skinned tectonics and is characterized by in-sequence and out-of-sequence sole thrusting and involved basement. Quartz c-axis fabric, kinematic vorticity number, and finite strain analyses were used to investigate the deformation characteristic of the Alvand granite-gneiss dome. The estimated kinematic vorticity number (Wk = Wm = 0.82 ± 0.11) from the quartz c-axis of quartzo-feldspathic mylonite reveals the relative contribution of 61% simple shear and 39% pure shear component. Measurement of the quartz c-axis opening angle of mylonite nappes documents the deformation temperature (472° ± 35°) and suggests an amphibolite facies condition. This mantled dome represents the ductile flow between an upper normal-sense boundary and a lower thrust-sense boundary, which reach down in the entire middle to lower parts of the gneissic continental crust. Structural and vorticity analyses suggest that the Alvand gneiss dome has resulted from the inclined (α = 25°) dextral transpression of the N. Gondwana and S. Lurasia margin and records four phases of deformation (D1, D2, D3, and D4) during structural evolution.
