SmI2, popularly known as Kagan's reagent, remains at the heart of synthetic reductive chemistry due to its unique versatility. While in most instances this reagent is used as a stoichiometric reagent, recent days have witnessed several methods using catalytic amounts of SmI2. This review systematically summarizes different methods in developing SmI2 catalyzed reactions. Current challenges and possible future directions are also presented.
