Cyanines comprising a barbiturate group facilitate controlled radical polymerization with Fe(III)Br3 as the catalyst by exposure at two wavelengths in the Near-Infrared region. Proceeding at either 790 or 870 nm, it moves such systems towards a greener approach since these systems work with environmentally friendly light sources such as NIR-LEDs. The oxygen tolerance opens new features of synthesizing tailor-made polymers following a protocol based on controlled radical polymerization.
