This study explores contestation over the meanings of unscientific mining activities in Jharia and the lived experiences of local residents. Jharia enjoys political attention due to its rich coal reserves but there have been least concerns for the inhabitants and to eco-system of this already decaying city. The ecological undoing of Jharia has led to its dilapidation and resulted displacement of its inhabitants. The flaming crevasses in the coal mine areas have made the entire zone arid. It has also adversely affected the health and livelihood of the people residing in and around mining areas. The broader objective is to bring to the fore the problems faced by the inhabitants as it is not just the decay of a geographical site, but also the decay of its socio-cultural aspects. A mixed method approach is adopted to elucidate ecological degradation of Jharia due to anthropocentric activities alongside exploring the living conditions of the inhabitants.
