An Apparatus for Studying Nonstationary Heat Exchange in Liquid Media

Abstract

An apparatus is described for studying unsteady heat transfer in various liquid media by the method of controlled heating of a thin wire probe. The main link of the setup is a high-speed electronic regulator that controls the power dissipated by the probe depending on the control voltage at the regulator input. The main parameters of the apparatus are: the probe is a 1-cm-long 20-μm platinum wire and the controller response time is ≈1–2 μs, the accuracy of maintaining the power value is 0.05%, the heating time is 1–500 ms, and the heat flux density from the probe surface is up to 20 MW/m2. A measurement technique is presented and an example of using a setup for studying the spinodal decomposition of an aqueous solution of polypropylene glycol (PPG-425), which has a lower critical dissolution temperature, is provided.
