In a recent letter (1), Lehr and Stöber argue against our interpretation of neural activity during the mnemonic delay period of a spatial working memory task as temporal coding (2). Because external cues (environmental and body derived) are kept constant during this period, they suggest activity reflects internally driven maintenance of spatial mnemonic content (3). From this perspective, they interpret our findings as evidence that the dCA2→dCA1 pathway stabilizes internally driven neural sequences.
