Designing efficient UV-curable flame-retardant and antimicrobial wood coating: Phosphorodiamidate reactive diluent with epoxy acrylate

Here, an efficient phosphorodiamidate (PPAE) reactive diluent functionalized with phosphonate ester was synthesized as a cross-linker with ultraviolet-curable epoxy acrylate for use in coating applications. The functionality of the phosphorodiamidate and structural properties of the reactive diluent were evaluated by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR), phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance (31P-NMR), and infrared (IR) spectra. In addition, an ultraviolet-cured reactive diluent (UV-RD) was investigated for its thermal, mechanical, and antimicrobial properties. Underwriters Laboratories UL-94 standard vertical burning test, limiting oxygen index (LOI) values, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, char yield in thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and antimicrobial study indicated the efficacy of the synthesized reactive diluent. The incorporation of PPAE into epoxy acrylate promoted the degradation of epoxy acrylate oligomer and enhanced char formation, as suggested by TGA. The thermal and mechanical properties of the materials were enhanced by increasing the concentration of the synthesized UV-RD, which showed efficient flame-retardant properties. Furthermore, the use of this novel material for wood-coating application shows improved performance in coating results including gel content, water absorption, adhesion, solvent scrub resistance, gloss, and pencil hardness. The improved efficiency of PPAE is important for increasing the durability of wood materials necessary for the construction of energy-efficient buildings.
