If film-philosophy often discovers fresh and forgotten films, filmmakers, philosophers, and theories, it is just as important that it re-explores what has been written about many times before. And of course, these things are not mutually exclusive, as Barry Nevin shows with Cracking Gilles Deleuze's Crystal: Narrative Space-time in the Films of Jean Renoir. There are dozens of books on Renoir, and the filmmaker has been lauded by cineastes as one of the greatest in cinema history. Nonetheless, Nevin enters the critical fray with vigour and purpose, proving that there is still much to be said of and through the director's films. To this end, one of the key aspects of Nevin's project is not only to “reassess” Renoir's “canonised landmarks” but also to “stimulate further analysis of his under-discussed works” (p. 182).
