Narrative Difference: Jacques Rancière, Gilles Deleuze and Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives

The recent engagement with eco-criticism typically foregrounds art cinema's thoughtful exploration of temporality (Ivakhiv, 2013; Macdonald, 2013). Yet, narrative, when discussed, is considered to adversely effect film's environmental awareness-raising capability (Ingram, 2000; Macdonald, 2013; Willoquet-Maricondi, 2010). To what extent can narrative progressively raise environmental-consciousness? Here film enhances broader debates. Prominent philosophers and eco-critics emphasize the need for new kinds of narratives to address climate change (Haraway, 2012; Rose et al., 2012; Stengers & Debaise, 2015). Eco-feminist Val Plumwood decries “the dominant narrative of heroic reason mastering blind nature” (2005, p. 6), while writer Ursula Le Guin's essay “The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction” (1996) questions the reduction of narrative to conflict and human agency. In parallel, queer, feminist and postcolonial narratologies have challenged teleology as masculinist, heterocentrist and white (Edelman, 2004; Lanser, 1991; Miller, 1981), calling for “a radical revision in theories of plot” (Lanser, 1991, p. 624). Having adopted a pluralist approach to temporality, they recognize the diversity of narrative forms across classical and non-classical texts and aim to describe different stories in positive rather than negative terms.
