The paper, after analysis of a large experimental data base, shows that, depending on the material, the effect of defect on the fatigue limit should be described through 5 major parameters:

Size, Type, Position, Morphology and Loading.

A fatigue criterion describing the effect of the defect through the local stress gradient is discussed and the identification procedure shows that each of the 5 major parameters can be taken into account. This criterion is included in a global modelling strategy starting from either µCT image or process simulation of the defect population and finishing with a defect size map at the scale of the structural component.
