Micro/nanostructural silica/alkali-treated natural zeolite coated fabrics for oil-water separation and heavy metal ions removal

The oil-water mixture or oily wastewater are complex, containing oil and other pollutants such as heavy metal ions. In this study, we synthesized a micro/nanostructural silica/alkali-treated natural zeolite coated fabric for oil-water separation and heavy metal ions removal. The alkali-treated natural zeolite with a low SiO2/Al2O3 ratio, and high hydroxyl group content exhibited excellent hydrophilicity and ion exchange property, while the nano-silica as a binder could assist the zeolite powders to form micro/nano-hierarchical structures on the surface of fabric. The as-prepared material with underwater superoleophobicity (151.5° for kerosene, 153.4° for cyclohexane) exhibited efficient oil-water separation efficiency (99.4% for kerosene, 98.0% for cyclohexane) and excellent recycle property (98.3% for kerosene, 96.8% for cyclohexane after recycled for 40 times). Additionally, the material could simultaneously remove heavy metal ions from water (86.5% for Cr ions, 67.4% for Mn ions after six times of separation). This study provided a simple, low cost and environmental approach for application in oil-water separation and heavy metal ions removal.
