Oxygen is a central player in most aspects of life – without it, many life-giving processes will drag to a halt. Remarkably, some cell death mechanisms also require the presence of oxygen. In their study, Cordon et al. show how oxygen-deprivation impedes the execution of ferroptosis in cancer cells. Ferroptosis is an oxidative cell death process that ultimately leads to oxidation and destruction of lipid membranes. The findings underscore the importance of understanding the role of oxygen when developing anticancer treatments.
