A unique base-dependent diastereoselective synthesis of polysubstituted pyrrolidines/dihydropyrroles from chalcone, benzylamine and benzaldehyde was described. After oxidized by DDQ, the resulting tetra-substituted pyrroles were found to be light-sensitive and undergo oxidative ring-opening reaction to yield the enamides upon UV irradiation.
