Impact of pH on structural and sensing characteristics of cresol red encapsulated polyethylene glycol assisted silica nanomatrix: Sol-gel method

Polyethylene glycol-assisted silica nanoparticles (SNPs) matrix is synthesized by the sol-gel method at a low temperature 60 °C. Cresol red is encapsulated in SNPs matrix (CR-SNPs) for sensing evaluation. Different pH (1–10) response on structural, optical, and sensing properties of the synthesized matrix is explored by fundamental techniques. Microscopic analysis shows porous crack-free morphology, uniform distribution of elements, and smooth ultrathin surface. The particle size of a synthesized matrix is increased from 28 nm to 42 nm by increasing the pH from 1 to 10. FTIR analysis confirms the Si–O–Si bonding and CR species bonding in all samples. UV–vis analysis shows 76% transparency, low refractive index 1.22 at 550 nm, and 46% porosity at pH 10. Color reversibility confirms that the synthesized CRS-NPs has stable life. Moreover, CRS-NPs revealed pKa value ∼7 at 518 nm, suggesting smaller degree of dissociation with dynamic sensitivity. Fast time response 0.51s was observed at pH 10.
