Effect of Water on the Rate of Methanol Conversion to Dimethyl Ether Over H-ZSM-5 Zeolite

The process of methanol conversion to dimethyl ether (DME) in the presence of water over ZSM-5 zeolite was studied. According to the analysis of the experimental data, it was found that the presence of water inhibits the DME formation due to the competitive adsorption on active acid sites within the Langmuir–Hinshelwood models, which consider both associative and dissociative mechanisms of methanol adsorption. The thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of the DME synthesis in the presence of water are calculated, namely equilibrium constant, entropy, heat of water adsorption, and the order of reaction with water.
