High voltage aqueous Zn/LiCoO2 hybrid battery under mildly alkaline conditions

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-based batteries (RAZBs) are attractive alternatives for lithium-ion batteries due to their non-flammability, low cost, and high volumetric capacity. However, the lack of durable high potential cathode materials restricts the voltage of RAZBs. Many high potential cathodes are layered lithium metal oxides (e.g., LiCoO2), which oftentimes degrade in aqueous acidic or neutral electrolytes. This work reports a 1.99 V aqueous Zn/LiCoO2 hybrid battery with remarkable cycling stability and excellent rate capability. The outstanding performance is rendered by aqueous mildly alkaline ammonia-containing electrolyte (MAAE) that promotes the reversibility of LiCoO2 cathode and inhibits the dendrite growth of Zn anode. This novel aqueous electrolyte unlocks exciting promises towards advanced aqueous zinc-based batteries with high voltage and high energy density.
