Bismuth-based Nanomaterials for Aqueous Alkaline Batteries: Recent Progress and Perspectives

Aqueous alkaline batteries (AABs) have received particularly increasing research interest and considered as the most promising stational energy storage system due to their merits of high safety, environmental benignity and cost-effectiveness. Among various anode candidates for AABs, bismuth-based materials show special advantages such as non-toxic, low redox potential and high theoretical capacity. In this review, we first overview the structure of Bi-based active materials and their energy storage mechanism. Then we summarize the application of Bi and its compound in AABs including the efficient modification strategies. The key challenges and future opportunities in this rapidly developpping field are concluded in the end.
